Care & Maintenance
Guidance on preserving your guqin's beauty, tone, and structural integrity for generations.
How should I care for my guqin in daily use?
Proper daily care is the foundation of your guqin's longevity and performance.
- Environmental Control:
- Humidity: Maintain 40%-70% relative humidity (RH). Use a humidifier in dry climates/heaters, a dehumidifier in damp climates. Extreme dryness causes cracking; excess humidity promotes mold and swelling.
- Temperature: A stable range of 15°C - 25°C (59°F - 77°F) is ideal. Avoid rapid fluctuations.
- Avoid: Direct sunlight, air vents (heating/AC), damp basements, and the trunk of a car.
- Cleaning:
- Lacquer Surface: Wipe gently with a soft, slightly dampened cotton or microfiber cloth. Never use chemical cleaners, alcohol, or abrasive cloths.
- Strings: After playing, run a dry cloth along the length of each string to remove skin oils and moisture.
- Dust Prevention: Keep the guqin in its bag or under a soft cloth when not in use.
- Playing Habits:
- Wash and dry hands before playing.
- Be mindful of long fingernails to avoid scratching the lacquer.
- Tune slowly and gently to prevent string breakage or damage to the bridge/nut.
- If not playing for an extended period (months), slightly loosen the strings to reduce tension on the body.
- Storage:
- Always use the provided padded bag or a hard case for storage and transport.
- Store horizontally on a stable surface or on a dedicated, sturdy guqin stand. Never lean it against a wall.
- Never place objects on top of the instrument.
A detailed Care and Preservation Guide and a basic maintenance kit are included with every Sundayou guqin.
How can I address common minor issues like light surface scratches or stiff tuning pegs?
Many small problems can be remedied with simple, careful actions.
- Light Surface Scratches (in the clear coat only):
- Assessment: The scratch has not penetrated to the colored lacquer or wood beneath.
- Remedy: Apply a tiny amount of very fine polishing compound (e.g., >12,000 grit) or dedicated lacquer polish to a soft cloth. Rub gently along the direction of the scratch, then buff with a clean cloth. For micro-scratches only.
- Never: Use sandpaper or abrasive pads, which will cause greater damage.
- Stiff or Squeaky Tuning Pegs (Zhen):
- Cause: Low humidity causing wood-on-wood friction, or accumulated dust.
- Remedy:
- Apply a small amount of specialized "peg compound" or a tiny pinch of pure talcum powder to the cylindrical shaft of the peg.
- Insert and turn the peg gently several times to distribute the lubricant.
- Important: Never use liquid oils or waxes, as they can damage wood and lacquer over time.
- String Grooving Too Deeply into Bridge or Nut:
- Symptom: The string sinks into its groove, muting the sound and creating poor playing action. Over time, it can damage the wood.
- Remedy: This requires professional adjustment. Contact us for remote guidance or a referral to a qualified local repair person. Do not attempt to file the bridge or nut yourself.
- Fine, Superficial Lacquer Crazing (Not Structural):
- Symptom: A network of very fine lines in the lacquer, often after a sudden environmental change. The wood beneath is sound.
- Remedy: This may be the beginning of natural "crackle" (Duanwen) formation or an environmental stress response. Stabilize the humidity around 50% and monitor. It usually does not affect sound or structure and can be considered part of the instrument's character. No repair is needed; focus on preventing further sudden changes.
Golden Rule: If you are unsure, always contact us first with clear photos or a video. Do not attempt repairs on structural issues, the soundpost, or large lacquer areas without professional guidance.
How often does a guqin need professional maintenance?
Regular professional maintenance, like servicing a fine watch, prevents major issues and ensures optimal performance.
- Monthly Self-Check: Visually inspect for obvious issues: check string tension, look for new cracks or open joints, ensure all parts are secure.
- Basic Service (Every 6-12 months):
- Scope: Deep cleaning, inspection of string grooves for wear, peg lubrication, overall tuning stability assessment, minor adjustments.
- Performed by: An experienced player or a local string instrument technician (with our guidance if needed).
- Comprehensive Check & Setup (Every 2-3 years):
- Scope: Thorough structural inspection, assessment of internal soundpost (if accessible), repair of minor lacquer flaws, adjustment of bridge/nut height if worn, internal cleaning (by a specialist).
- Performed by: A professional luthier or experienced guqin restoration specialist.
- Major Restoration or Refinishing (10+ years or as needed):
- Triggers: Significant structural issues (severe warping, open joints), major lacquer damage, or a fundamental degradation of sound quality unaddressed by setup.
- Process: May involve partial disassembly, re-gluing, local or complete refinishing, and component replacement. This is a significant undertaking in time and cost.
Factors Influencing Maintenance Frequency:
- Usage: A daily performance instrument needs more frequent check-ups than one played occasionally.
- Environment: Instruments in highly variable climates require more vigilant care.
- Instrument Grade: Performance and collector-grade instruments benefit from more regular, detailed maintenance.
We offer lifetime technical consultation for all our custom guqins and can often recommend trusted technicians in our international network. For regions without local expertise, we offer a mail-in repair service (clients are responsible for secure shipping both ways).
